(Based on a free lecture given at the Astrological Society of Connecticut's February 20, 2011, New Age Fair; a version of this also appears in Jaguar Nights: A Journey Through the Tzolkin)
The Mayans, Aztecs, and other peoples of ancient Meso-America had in common a sacred calendar used for divination, still used today in Guatemala. This sacred calendar, called the Tzolkin in Mayan, has two parts—a series of 20 daysigns, and 13 numbers. Just like we have 7 days called “Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,” always in that order, and also the first, second, third, etc., in numerical order, they have 1 Imix, 2 Ik, 3 Akbal, 4 Kan, etc, and it takes 260 days to come back to the start. A new cycle just started—Friday, February 11, 2011 was 1 Imix. Today (February 20, 2011) is 10 Oc.
This sacred calendar was used to name children, and for astrology and divination. Each daysign has its own energy, as does each number, and those energies imprint you at birth just like any other horoscope energies. Your birth energy combines with those people around you, and even with each day’s energy. I know today’s 10 Oc, a burner day, and that gives me one level of understanding. If I combine today’s date with my birthday, 4 Akbal, I come up with 1 Ben—I’ll explain how that works in just a moment. My 4 Akbal energy is not negated, and neither is today’s 10 Oc, but they combine into a third energy, which is unifying distribution and initiating new pathways. The burner quality of 10 Oc is outgoing, expressive energy, and 10 Oc is about comforting others. Putting all that together, what would be some things I could do today to distribute knowledge? Write this article, perhaps?
All the things for this technique are here on my website, and you don’t need to know anything in depth about the sacred calendar to use these tools. If you do want to know more, I offer my yearly calendar, and I’m working on a big book, over 300 pages, that is just about the sacred calendar. I should be able to take pre-orders by May and be selling it in August. (You may also want to check out my teacher’s vast book, Manual for the Soul, whitepuppress.ca—tell her I sent you.)
Here’s the basics of the technique: any two or more Tzolkin dates can be combined into a relationship aspect. This generates a new Tzolkin date, representing the potential energy of the original dates working together. There are no inherently “bad” or “good” combinations, as every relationship has both good and bad aspects. On the Quick Tzolkin Symbols chart, the concepts in parentheses represent the shadowy, challenging aspects of each daysign.
You can combine the energies of two or more people in any type of relationship—romantic, friendship, or professional, or a person/people and a date (start of a business or marriage). You can combine your own energy and today’s energy as I did previously.
If you do not already know the Tzolkin dates, please consult my 150-year ephemeris. (You can also use any convertor program on the internet, as long as it uses the GMT correlation constant of 584283.)
Basically, you must acquire two or more daysign/number combinations. Each daysign has an inherent numerical value from 1 to 20 and obviously the numbers go from 1 to 13.
Combine the dates using standard numerology—add the daysigns together and note the results, then add the numbers together and note that result. If the combination of the daysigns is greater than 20, subtract 20 until the result is between 1 and 20. For the numbers, subtract 13 until the result is between 1 and 13. The Tzolkin Aspects Key table saves you from even that bit of math.
For instance, this is the energy of my husband and me.
4 Chuen (daysign 11)
+4 Akbal (daysign 2)
=================
8 Ix (daysign 14)
(4+4=8, 11 [Chuen]+3 [Akbal]=14 [Ix])
There is an alternate method. Using the Tzolkin Simple Reference Chart, determine what number each combination is (1-260). Add those numbers together. If the result is greater than 260, subtract 260. Look back at the chart to see what daysign the result is. Using the same example as above:
(4 Chuen = day 251) + ( 4 Akbal = day 43) = 294-260=day 34 (8 Ix)
Look at the Quick Tzolkin Symbols list to determine the energy for your result. The keywords for numbers are verbs and for daysigns are nouns, which can be combined to make phrases. You don’t need to know anything about the more complex aspects of the Tzolkin—just interpret the resulting phrases however it feels right to you.
For the example, with the result of 8 Ix, we have as a result harmonizing and empowering transformation on a good day, and deviousness on a bad day. If you’d like another, optional, layer of information, you can check the Tzolkin Simple Reference Chart to see if the result has any special energy (that chart will also tell you what number each daysign is).
In this case, 8 Ix does not have any extra energy layers.
Where is this information useful? Any relationship between two people generates energy, whether friends, lovers, coworkers, or collaborators. If you and a friend want to set up a yoga studio or healing practice, and your result is a Chicchan or Cauac day, your success isn’t guaranteed, but having those energies in the relationship would help. (Of course, if one of you was born on a Chicchan or Cauac day, you’ve already got that energy!) If you’re an aspiring entertainer, perhaps you want an offer from an agent that gives you a result of Lamat (superstar). Or even to receive the offer on a date, that when combined with your natal date, gives you Lamat.
As a type of electional astrology, if you want to be a superstar, look at the chart and see what daysign matches yours to create a Lamat result and try to time your efforts to those days. If you have control over the timing of these events (such as leeway when to sign a contract) you can see what number would combine with the desired daysign for the best result.
I’ve calculated many daysign aspects around the 2008 Presidential election. For example, Joe Biden was born on 4 Caban, the date the Aztecs believe the world will end (nothing to do with 2012). President Obama was born with the energy of 9 Ben—he is a pathfinder. Combined, their energy result is 13 Oc—transforming the world into a comfortable place.
John McCain was born on 3 Manik—he activates cooperation, while Sarah Palin has the energy of 7 Ix—she aligns people for transformation. Together, their energy result is 10 Imix, a return to the perfect source.
The most interesting thing I learned through these aspects is that the energy of John plus Sarah plus and the swearing-in date of 1/20/2009 is the same energy as the combination of Obama and Biden—13 Oc. So maybe it didn’t matter so much who got elected?
